Choosing a programme

Find the right starting point for your age, experience and goals.

Which programme is right for me?

  • First Step develops foundations for younger dancers, including beginners.
  • Dance Vision offers professional preparation for dancers with an established training background.
  • Phoenix is a summer intensive combining classes, rehearsals and performance preparation.
  • ChoreoCraft offers individual coaching and choreographic work.

Compare the age guidance, experience and commitment on each programme page. If you are unsure, ask for programme guidance with a short description of your background and goals.

I train at a local dance school. Could SADA be my next step?

Yes, you can contact us if you are ready to explore more structured training. Tell us about your current classes, experience and ambitions, whether you live in Salzburg, the surrounding region or Bavaria.

We can discuss an appropriate programme and the commitment it involves. Placement, readiness and any combination with your existing dance classes need to be considered individually. Explore our local and regional admissions guidance.

What ages are the programmes for?

First Step is primarily for dancers aged 10–13. Dance Vision welcomes applications from age 14; admission and group allocation follow an audition and individual assessment. Phoenix is generally for ages 13+, while ChoreoCraft considers suitability individually. These programme guidelines take account of experience, development and group suitability.

Check the relevant programme page and contact us if you are close to an age boundary. Applicants under 18 need the required parent or legal-guardian approval.

How much dance experience do I need?

Entry requirements depend on the programme. First Step focuses on developing foundations, while more intensive programmes require an established training background.

Dance Vision applicants are generally expected to have at least three years of consistent dance training. Please check the relevant programme page for the applicable requirements.

Do I need the same level in ballet and contemporary dance?

For Dance Vision, applicants may have a stronger background in ballet, contemporary dance or both. You can indicate a Ballet, Contemporary or Balanced orientation when applying. These preferences help guide group allocation and training emphasis within the shared programme; they are not separate courses.

Can dancers who are not enrolled at SADA book individual coaching?

Yes. ChoreoCraft is available to both SADA participants and external dancers who meet the relevant entry requirements. It offers individual coaching and tailored choreography for auditions, performances and other artistic projects. The scope, schedule and fees are agreed before a booking is confirmed.

What is SADA, and who runs it?

The Salzburg Academy for Dance Arts (SADA) is a dance education and artistic initiative presented and organised by Dance Vision Salzburg, an Austrian association. Dance Vision Salzburg is responsible for its organisation and administration.

SADA brings together foundation training, professional preparation, summer intensives and individual coaching. Read about the academy or see the imprint for the organisation’s legal details.

Training & timetable

Understand the weekly commitment, classes and year ahead.

What does the training include?

Training focuses on classical ballet and contemporary dance. Depending on the programme and agreed training scope, it may also include repertoire, rehearsals, improvisation, creative work, pointe work, men’s technique and individual coaching.

The content and intensity are adapted to the programme, group and participants’ stage of development.

How many days a week would I train?

  • Dance Vision has a five-day Full-Year Pathway and a three-day Compact Pathway. The Full-Year Pathway comprises approximately 11–15 training units per week; the Compact scope and timetable are confirmed individually. Training units should not be read as clock hours.
  • First Step runs on Monday and Wednesday, 17:30–19:30, with an optional Friday session, 14:30–15:30. This is approximately four or five hours a week, including short supervised breaks.
  • Phoenix follows its intensive summer schedule. ChoreoCraft is arranged individually.

Check the current programme information for date-specific changes. Rehearsals, performances and intensive periods can require additional attendance.

Can I combine SADA training with school, university or other commitments?

This depends on the programme and your other commitments. First Step is designed to complement school attendance. Dance Vision offers different weekly attendance pathways, but rehearsals, performances and intensive periods may require additional attendance. Check the full schedule before committing to a programme.

Is Phoenix part of Dance Vision?

Yes. The three-week Phoenix summer intensive is a required, integral part of Dance Vision and its concluding training phase. The standalone two-week Phoenix option does not replace that requirement.

Include this commitment when planning your year. Check the current programme information and participation agreement for confirmed dates and the fees applicable to your pathway.

What language is used in classes?

English is commonly used, particularly in international and professional training contexts. First Step is taught primarily in German.

The language used in other programmes depends on the programme and group. Please contact us before applying if you would like to discuss language support.

Is there a dress code?

Yes. Suitable dancewear helps teachers observe alignment and movement and supports safe participation.

Requirements vary by programme and class. Specific clothing and footwear information is provided before participation.

What attendance is expected?

Regular, punctual attendance is expected within the agreed programme schedule. Please report absences as early as possible and in advance where foreseeable.

Consistent participation supports training progress, rehearsals, performance preparation and, where applicable, programme completion and certification.

Applications & auditions

Prepare your materials and understand what happens next.

How do I apply, and is an audition required?

Complete the online application form linked from the relevant programme page.

Admission procedures vary. Dance Vision requires an audition, either in person or by video. Other programmes may use a placement assessment or request additional information or material.

Where audition material is required, follow the guidance on the relevant programme or application page.

What should I prepare before starting an application?

Have the dancer’s details, a regularly checked contact email and relevant training history ready. The form marks the information needed for your programme.

  • Dance Vision and Phoenix applicants provide dance photographs.
  • Dance Vision applicants choosing a video audition need an accessible audition link and any password.
  • A CV is optional for all four student programmes. First Step beginners do not need previous training experience or a CV.
  • Phoenix and ChoreoCraft video material is optional; it supports planning or consultation.

The form explains permitted file types and sizes. Please do not upload identity documents or medical records with an initial application. Choose your programme to see its form.

Can I audition for Dance Vision from abroad?

Yes. Dance Vision accepts video auditions as well as in-person auditions. Follow the current video guidance, check that your link works and include any access password.

A video application is assessed for suitability; submitting it does not confirm a place. Placement and practical arrangements are discussed before enrolment.

Does my audition video need to be professionally filmed?

For Dance Vision, professional filming is not required. Use a clear recording that shows your full body and follow the current video requirements on the programme page. Check that your video link works and include any required access password in the application form.

Can I join during the programme year?

Dance Vision and First Step accept applications during the programme year. A later starting date may be possible, depending on available places, suitable placement and the relevant admission assessment. The starting date must be agreed with SADA. Other programmes follow their own published dates and application arrangements.

When can I expect a response?

We aim to respond to complete applications within seven working days. This may take longer during busy application periods or if further information or audition material is needed.

Can I visit SADA or observe a class before applying?

Please contact us to ask whether a visit or class observation can be arranged. Availability depends on the programme, timetable and activities taking place. Please wait for confirmation before making travel arrangements.

Can I contact SADA before applying?

Yes. If you are unsure which programme may suit you, email info@dance.vision with a brief outline of your dance experience, interests and preferred programme. For younger applicants, a parent or legal guardian is welcome to contact us.

Which languages can I use when contacting SADA?

You can contact us in English, German or Chinese. The student application forms let you indicate your preferred correspondence language.

Correspondence language is separate from the language of teaching. Check the class-language information for your programme.

Fees & enrolment

Know the costs and terms before making a commitment.

What are the fees and payment options?

Fees depend on the programme, agreed training scope and participation period. Current information is provided on the programme page or during the admission process.

Any applicable additional charges, payment options and participation terms are confirmed before you commit to enrolment.

Is the Phoenix summer programme fee included in Dance Vision?

For Dance Vision’s Full-Year Pathway, the Phoenix programme fee is included in the annual tuition; a separate administration contribution applies. For the Compact Pathway, the Phoenix programme fee and administration contribution are additional.

Your complete individual fee proposal sets out the applicable amounts and charges before you commit. Refer to the Dance Vision details and your participation agreement.

Is there an application fee?

Submitting an initial online enquiry, application or preliminary application creates no payment obligation. Any fees for a later audition, programme or service are communicated and agreed separately before you commit.

Phoenix 2027 preliminary applications may be submitted without payment. Please check the Phoenix programme page for the current application stage and conditions.

Submitting a form does not confirm admission or reserve a place.

What other costs should I budget for?

Alongside programme fees, consider travel, accommodation, meals, local transport, dancewear and personal insurance, as well as visa or residence permit expenses where applicable. Check your programme information and agreement for what is included. Any mandatory additional programme charges are communicated before a binding agreement is concluded.

Are fee reductions or scholarships available?

Limited fee reductions may be available for selected programmes or applicants, depending on individual circumstances and available resources. Requests are considered individually, and a reduction cannot be guaranteed.

SADA does not currently offer full internal scholarships as a standard funding arrangement. Where appropriate, we may provide information about external funding opportunities.

Does submitting an application confirm my place?

No. An enquiry, application or preliminary application does not by itself confirm admission, reserve a place or create a participation contract.

Submitting the initial online form creates no payment obligation. Any offer, applicable fees and participation terms are provided before a binding agreement is concluded. Any separate audition fees are communicated and agreed in advance.

What happens if I need to cancel or stop attending?

Please contact us as soon as possible. Cancellation, notice periods and any refund depend on the applicable programme terms and your participation agreement. Missing classes or stopping attendance does not automatically end the agreement or create a right to a refund. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Life in Salzburg

Plan your journey, accommodation and practical arrangements.

Where does training take place?

Training takes place in professional dance studios at Probehaus Salzburg, Gewerbehofstrasse 7/9a, 5023 Salzburg-Gnigl.

Depending on the programme and production, stage rehearsals and performances may take place at other venues. Participants receive the relevant location and scheduling information in advance.

Does SADA provide accommodation or meals?

No. Participants and their families arrange and pay for their own accommodation, meals and travel. SADA does not provide boarding or round-the-clock care. This applies to international Dance Vision students as well as Phoenix participants and visitors for auditions or coaching.

For a dancer under 18, a parent or legal guardian must agree suitable arrangements. Read our guidance on short stays or moving to Salzburg for training before making bookings.

If you plan to self-cater, check kitchen access with the accommodation provider. Any breakfast or other meal arrangements are agreed directly with them.

Where can I look for short-term accommodation?

For Phoenix, auditions, workshops or other short stays, options may include hostels, guesthouses, hotels and serviced apartments. Existing search resources include:

Ask the provider directly about availability, eligibility, meals and cancellation conditions. These are independent resources, not SADA accommodation partners or guarantees. Bookings and payments are made directly with the provider.

Travelling with a dancer under 18? Read our short-stay guidance for families before booking.

Where can I look for longer-term accommodation?

For a term or academic year, you can explore shared flats, private rooms, furnished apartments and student residences. Start early and confirm eligibility: taking a SADA programme does not automatically qualify you for student housing.

Student residence resources:

Other housing search resources:

Some resources are available only in German. SADA does not arrange accommodation or guarantee availability, suitability or prices. Check the provider, property, contract, deposit and cancellation conditions before paying.

For a dancer under 18, read our guidance on moving to Salzburg for training before agreeing accommodation.

Do I need a visa or residence permit for Austria?

Requirements depend on your nationality, length and purpose of stay, and individual circumstances. Check the official Austrian visa (opens in a new tab) and residence information (opens in a new tab) and the competent authorities before making travel plans.

Participants are responsible for obtaining any required permission and documents. SADA may provide relevant programme or enrolment documentation where applicable, but cannot guarantee approval or provide individual immigration advice.

What should I confirm before booking travel?

Confirm your participation status, starting date, timetable and any in-person audition arrangements with SADA. Check accommodation, transport and any supervision arrangements for younger dancers, as well as immigration requirements where applicable.

Phoenix 2027 dates and details remain provisional. Wait for confirmation before making non-refundable bookings. A preliminary application does not reserve a place.

Parents & younger dancers

Find answers about beginners, guardian approval and supervision.

Can beginners join First Step?

Yes. First Step welcomes beginners and younger dancers with limited experience. Placement considers the dancer’s development and suitability for the group.

Tell us about their interests and any previous experience. A professional CV is not required. You are welcome to ask for guidance before applying.

Can a parent or legal guardian complete the application?

Yes. For First Step, a parent or legal guardian must complete and submit the application for their child. For other programmes, a parent or legal guardian may complete the application for a younger dancer. Enter the dancer’s details in the participant section and the parent or legal guardian’s details in the appropriate contact sections.

For applicants under 18, the form asks for guardian contact details and the required approval. Please use an email address that will be checked regularly. The application is followed by a separate enrolment process.

Does SADA provide general schooling?

No. SADA provides dance training and artistic development, but does not provide general academic schooling. Participants and their families must arrange any required general education separately.

Who supervises participants under 18?

SADA supervises official classes, rehearsals, performances and other announced activities. Families arrange suitable care, travel and collection outside those activities. SADA does not provide boarding or round-the-clock care; our legal duties of care remain unaffected.

For dancers under 18, including those aged 16 or 17, a parent or legal guardian must agree the travel, accommodation and care arrangements. The care needed depends on the dancer and the stay; guardian involvement does not always mean living together.

Phoenix participation requirement: for a dancer under 16 at the course start, the legal guardian must arrange an adult aged 18 or above in Salzburg to undertake supervision outside programme hours. This is SADA’s course requirement, separate from the legal rules for accommodation.

For practical next steps, read our guidance on short stays or moving to Salzburg for training.

What should families arrange for a short stay?

For Phoenix, auditions or short coaching visits, agree travel, accommodation and care outside programme hours with the parent or legal guardian. Before booking, ask the accommodation provider about its minimum age, written consent and accompanying-adult requirements.

The Salzburg overnight-stay rules (opens in a new tab) generally require under-16s to have a supervising adult with them in hotels, hostels and other accommodation establishments, and on campsites. An exception can apply to 14- and 15-year-olds where there are no youth-protection concerns; attending a dance course does not automatically establish this.

Check the actual arrangement with the provider. If the legal position or an exception is uncertain, clarify it with the competent local authority before booking. An adult available only by telephone is not accompanying the dancer.

For Phoenix participants under 16, SADA’s separate supervision requirement still applies. Wait for confirmed programme dates before making non-refundable bookings.

Can a dancer under 18 move to Salzburg for training?

Yes, a dancer can live away from the family home for training where suitable arrangements are in place. For Dance Vision or another longer stay, the parent or legal guardian should plan housing, everyday support and emergency arrangements around the dancer’s age, maturity and needs.

Guardian responsibility continues when a young person lives elsewhere for education. Being under 16 does not, by itself, mean that an adult must share the dancer’s home; turning 16 does not automatically mean full independence. See the Austrian guidance on living away from home for education (opens in a new tab).

Check the actual type of accommodation. A longer booking, a private apartment or the label “student residence” does not automatically settle which rules apply. Where accommodation falls under the Salzburg overnight-stay rules (opens in a new tab), those rules must still be met. Ask the provider and, if unclear, the competent local authority.

Before confirming the move, tell SADA about the proposed living and support arrangements and who can help locally. SADA provides programme supervision, not accommodation or care outside programme activities.

Does First Step automatically lead to Dance Vision?

First Step can build foundations for future progression into Dance Vision, but admission is not automatic. Readiness, experience and suitability are assessed individually, and Dance Vision has its own admission requirements.

Talk with the teaching team about the dancer’s development and an appropriate next step.

Wellbeing & access

Discuss participation, health and individual support needs.

How does SADA support health and injury prevention?

Within Dance Vision, dance science sessions support body awareness, conditioning, recovery, injury prevention and sustainable training habits.

Participants are encouraged to seek qualified professional advice when needed. Where appropriate, SADA can provide information about physiotherapists, sports medicine specialists or other health professionals familiar with the demands of dance.

Can I discuss a disability or additional support needs before applying?

Please contact us before applying to discuss any access, communication or learning support you may need. Possible adjustments and practical arrangements need to be considered individually in relation to your needs and the programme. You do not need to send detailed medical records with your initial enquiry.

Should I include medical information with my application?

Please do not send medical records or detailed health information with your initial application. If you need to discuss participation or an adjustment, contact us first so that the relevant information and an appropriate way to provide it can be agreed.

Programme-specific fitness, insurance or health requirements are communicated before participation. These differ between programmes; check the information provided for yours.

Performance & next steps

Explore stage experience, progression and completion.

How does performance form part of the training?

Rehearsals, stage preparation and performance help dancers apply their technical and artistic training in practice.

The opportunities available depend on the programme and production. Where appropriate, participants gain experience of rehearsal discipline, stage awareness and performance responsibility in a professional theatre setting.

What is the SADA Dance Gala Spotlight?

The SADA Dance Gala Spotlight is a major public performance bringing together work developed through SADA’s training and artistic activities.

The programme may include ensemble pieces, classical and contemporary repertoire, selected solos and other choreographic projects. Details are published on the Dance Gala page.

How are performance opportunities and roles decided?

Performance work depends on the programme, production and the dancer’s readiness. Casting takes account of technical development, artistic suitability, rehearsal progress, safety and production needs. A particular work, role, solo or variation is not guaranteed.

Phoenix includes participation in its final performance process as part of the programme. This does not promise a particular role or solo; follow the confirmed programme and rehearsal arrangements.

Does SADA help with professional auditions?

Within Dance Vision, participants may receive guidance on audition preparation, videos, CVs, application materials and portfolio development.

Support depends on the participant’s training stage and agreed programme scope. Where appropriate, guidance may also cover suitable audition opportunities and professional presentation.

Will I receive a certificate, and what does it recognise?

Participants who successfully complete the requirements of their programme may receive a SADA Certificate of Completion. Depending on the programme, it may record the training period, pathway, areas of study and participation or training hours.

SADA certificates document dance training and artistic development. Unless expressly stated otherwise for a particular programme, they are not Austrian state-recognised academic degrees, school-leaving qualifications or professional licences.
